Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus displays a unique range over an area of 7,300 square meters on 5 floors: books, audio books, music, films, a sheet music store and a stationery shop. The media store was opened in 1997. It offers Germany’s largest selection of DVDs and the most comprehensive collection of classical and opera music in the world. In December 2010, the English Bookshop was opened and invites visitors to browse through Germany’s largest selection of English language books displayed on two floors in an elegant British atmosphere. The jazz department won the ECHO Jazz award in 2011.
Sales staff are knowledgeable, passionate even about their area of expertise and numerous listening points and reading corners contribute to a unique shopping experience. Each month, customers can enjoy readings, short concerts and book signings on the KulturBühne stage, directly adjacent to the café- restaurant “Ursprung”, without entrance charge. Opening times at the KulturKaufhaus are unusually long: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to midnight and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
There are two exceptional highlights awaiting visitors in the Atrium at Dussmann house. The 3,500 year- old sphinx of Queen Hatschepsut, on permanent loan from the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, is exhibited against a backdrop of 6,000 tropical plants. The famous French landscape artist, Patrick Blanc, built the stunning Vertical Garden here in January 2012 which grows and blooms over 270 vertical square meters from the 16,200 liter water basin at its foot.
